Five simple facts about the DP-600 exam updates

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In this post I cover five simple facts about the DP-600 exam updates. To raise awareness about the fact that the skills measured for this Microsoft Fabric exam will change on November 15th, 2024.

Five simple facts about the DP-600 exam updates

It is in a similar format to my previous post that covered four simple facts about the DP-600 exam. To make things clearer, share some links and to provide some recommendations.

Microsoft announced these changes just before the availability of the DP-700 beta exam. Those looking to take the DP-700 beta exam can prepare yourselves now with my checklist for the DP-700 beta exam.

For those currently intending to take the DP-600 exam before November 15th, it looks like the current skills measured before November 15th are no longer in the official DP-600 study guide.

However, you can find the previous skills measure in an old post by Andy Cutler (l/b). Which shows a breakdown of the original skills measured for the DP-600 exam.

Plus, Pragati Jain (l/t) mentions some of the changes towards the end of her updated post about the DP-600 Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate Certification.

Anyway, the five simple facts are as below.

1: Will not be replaced by the DP-700 exam

I made it clear in a previous post that the DP-700 exam will not replace the DP-600 exam. Since they are intended for different roles.

Which is more noticeable now with the DP-600 exam changes. As it highlights more that the DP-600 exam requires more knowledge about semantic models.

In fact, you can think of the new Microsoft Certified: Microsoft Fabric Data Engineer Associate certification as a Microsoft Fabric variant of the existing Azure Data Engineer Associate certification.

2: Planning knowledge for Microsoft Fabric environment no longer required

Previously, you needed knowledge relating to Microsoft Fabric capacities and admin portal settings. In fact, I provided an overview of the Microsoft Fabric admin portal for the DP-600 exam.

It looks like that has all changed. From the middle of next month, you no longer need knowledge on how to plan, implement and manage Microsoft Fabric. Apart from knowledge about various workspace settings.

Could the absence of this open the door for a potential Fabric architect or administrator certification?

3: Knowledge about Real-Time Intelligence is now required

Some of you may have seen online that others are mentioning that Real-Time Intelligence questions appeared in their renewals for the DP-600 exam.

In the listed changes in the DP-600 study guide you can now see topics relating to Real-Time Intelligence. For example, how to select, filter, and aggregate data by using KQL.

Currently, there is no recommended Microsoft Learn material for Real-Time Intelligence on the DP-600 exam page.

However, I recommend going through the “Implement Real-Time Intelligence with Microsoft Fabric” learning path on Microsoft Learn. Especially if you intend to do the DP-700 exam.

4: Less focus on Data Warehouses and Lakehouses

When you go through the updates you can see there is less focus on Data Warehouses and Lakehouses.

To clarify, there are still various skills measured which apply to both of these items. However, the percentage of focus is much lower on them now. Mostly due to a combination of deleted sections and the introduction of Real-Time Intelligence.

5: Analytics development lifecycle mostly the same in the DP-600 exam updates

Most of the analytics development lifecycle is the same. With one small exception. Which is that the text on how to plan and implement deployment solutions has changed. It now states that knowledge on how to create and configure deployment pipelines is required.

Which makes me happy. Because it means that my detailed post about the analytics development lifecycle requirements for the DP-600 exam is still valid.

It is interesting that the changes did not include aligning with the lifecycle management terminology in the DP-700 exam. Plus, there is no mention of the TMDL or PBIR formats for Power BI Desktop Projects. However, I recommend knowing about them anyway for completeness.

Final words about these five simple facts about the DP-600 exam updates

I hope this post about five simple facts about the DP-600 exam updates makes things clearer for some of you.

Because I wanted to raise awareness about the fact that the skills measured for this exam are changing next month. Plus, show where you can still find the original skills measured.

Of course, if you have any comments or queries about this post feel free to reach out to me.
